Antioxidants for Breakfast

As I prepare my morning breakfast of 1/2 cup organic pomegranate juice, 2 tbsp fermented organic soy protein powder, 3 tbsp frozen wheatgrass juice, 1 tbsp powdered greens, 1 banana, 2 tbsp freshly ground flaxseed, 1/2 tsp amla powder I am confident that I am getting a whopping supply of daily antioxidants and breast protective substances. Amla (Indian gooseberry) is one of the highest food forms of antioxidants, while pomegranate juice is one, if not the highest antioxidant-containing beverage.

A 2008 study tested beverages to evaluate which provided the highest antioxidant activity. Four tests evaluated antioxidant potency, one test evaluated antioxidant functionality, while another looked at total polyphenol content. Beverages tested included apple juice, acai juice, black cherry juice, blueberry juice, cranberry juice, concord grape juice, orange juice, red wine, iced tea, black tea, green tea, white tea and pomegranate juice. Pomegranate juice had more than 20% antioxidant potency compared to all the other beverages. The beverages with the highest antioxidant capacity in order of effectiveness were:

  1. pomegranate juice
  2. red wine
  3. Concord grape juice
  4. blueberry juice
  5. black cherry juice
  6. açaí juice
  7. cranberry juice
  8. orange juice
  9. iced tea beverages
  10. apple juice
